Operation/Observation
Observation draws a distinction and indicates one of its sides at a given moment.
Observation is not a passive representation of reality. It creates visibility through a distinction. Precisely for this reason, it is productive to examine not only the results of observation but also the forms of observation being used.
Distinctions used
Observer/Observed
Which position and interests shape the description?
Observation
- Phenomenon
- Participants describe the same event in contradictory ways and treat one perspective as objective.
- Insight
- Different descriptions become useful as indications of observers' positions.
- Blind spot
- The distinction being used cannot fully observe itself in the same operation.
Kanban intervention
- Intervention
- Regularly compare multiple observations, data and decisions.
- Changed conditions
- Diverging perspectives become material for learning rather than merely disturbances.
- Limits
- Reflection does not eliminate blind spots; it shifts them.
