Boundaries
Boundaries determine which communications are attributed to an organisation and which belong to its environment.
Boundaries are not merely lines in an organisational chart. They emerge where communication establishes belonging and distinguishes expectations concerning the inside and the outside.
Distinctions used
System/Environment
Which events are considered manageable internally, and which are treated as external?
Observation
- Phenomenon
- Responsibilities and expectations end at different, often unspoken boundaries.
- Insight
- Conflicts can be understood as competing boundary distinctions rather than merely individual behaviour.
- Blind spot
- Every boundary distinction obscures mutual dependencies.
Kanban intervention
- Intervention
- Jointly visualise services, entry criteria and handovers.
- Changed conditions
- Decisions about boundaries can be discussed before work is passed on without clarification.
- Limits
- Visualisation does not determine which boundary will remain viable in the long term.
